Service Award Policy
Award Calculation
Effective January 2019, service calculations for all employees with 19 years of service or less based on their original hire date with the company of 1/1/1998 or after will be based on years of service as documented for the vesting of the Wright Service Corp. Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP). An exception to this rule: Employees receiving 20 years of service or more based on their original hire date with the company of 12/31/1997 or before, will be grandfathered into the historical calculation process that was in effect prior to this change.
Awardee Attendance
Awards will be distributed the year after each milestone is reached. All invitees are permitted to bring one guest to the banquet.
- Field/Remote WSC: Employees who hit milestones of 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40 or 45 years of service will be invited and awarded at the banquet.
- WSC Corporate Office: Employees based in West Des Moines (non-remote) who hit milestones of 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, or 40 years of service will be invited.
- Management Meeting Attendees: Those who attended the management meetings earlier in the week have the option to attend the banquet and be awarded their certificate if they are hitting a milestone year, starting at 5 years of service.
Unable to make it? If an awardee is unable to attend the banquet, they will be mailed their certificates the week of the banquet.
Banquet Travel Reimbursement and Payroll
One hotel room will be reserved for an out-of-town employee (living more than 30 miles from the WSC headquarters) receiving an award or retiree and provided by the company for the evening of the banquet. As always, we value your safety. We encourage local attendees to use a rideshare to get home safely.
For awardees with a hotel room, the company will pay for your stay, but your responsibility will be any incidentals, movies, or phone charges. For those reasons, you must provide a personal credit card upon check-in.
Employees traveling less than 700 miles to Des Moines should plan to drive to the event. However, if you’re within 700 miles and flying would be a more cost-effective way to travel, an employee should receive approval from their supervisor to fly. Employees traveling more than 700 miles to Des Moines are authorized to fly. However, in the instance when multiple employees are traveling together, driving may be a more cost-effective way to travel. Employees should make the best determination for their travel plans to take the low-cost alternative and consult with their supervisor for approval.
Employees will be reimbursed for reasonably priced meals and mileage at the current government rate (2025 rate: $0.655) during their travel to and from the event. Employees should follow the reimbursement process for your company which may include filling out a reimbursement form and submitting receipts. Please ensure your manager’s approval of the charges prior to submitting it to your AP team.
If employee travel interferes with the time needed to complete a 40-hour work week, employees will be paid for the portion of travel time needed to complete a 40-hour work week. An executive in the employee’s respective company must approve payment for more than eight regular hours. If an employee needs more than Friday to travel to the event, it must be approved by the supervisor. If an employee works four 10-hour days, they will not be paid for travel outside of that work week. If an employee works five 8-hour days, they will be paid for a full day on Friday for travel.
Retiree Attendance
Employees who attended the management meeting are invited to the banquet every year following their retirement from the company. All other employees are invited to attend the banquet the following year of their retirement if they retire with 20 or more years of service. One hotel room will be reserved and provided by the company for the evening of the banquet.
John Wright Memorial Award Contest Winner Attendance
First place winners of the John Wright Memorial Award Contest and their guardians are invited to attend the banquet. Hotel and travel will be paid for the winner and one guardian for those residing in North America by the division the employee works in. Refer to the Banquet Travel Reimbursement and Payroll section regarding reimbursement. Winners residing outside of North America are only eligible to receive the prize money.
Invitees traveling less than 700 miles to Des Moines should plan to drive to the event. Invitees traveling more than 700 miles to Des Moines are authorized to fly. Invitees will be reimbursed for mileage at the current government rate (2023 rate: $0.655) or airfare during their travel to and from the event.
